Football Association of Ireland Backs Motion Calling for Uefa Ban on Israel
The Football Association of Ireland has voted in favor to present a formal motion to Uefa, calling for the exclusion of Israeli football from continental team and national competitions.
Grounds for the Recommended Suspension
The resolution, which was put forward by Irish side Bohemians, cited claimed violations by the Israel Football Association of two key Uefa statutes.
- Failure to implement and enforce an proper anti-racism policy.
- Organisation of football teams in occupied Palestinian territories without the approval of the Palestinian Football Association.
Ballot Results and Next Steps
As stated in an announcement from the FAI, the proposal was backed by 74 votes, with 7 against and 2 abstentions.
The association intends to officially present this request to the Uefa executive committee, asking for the prompt ban of the Israel Football Association from Uefa competitions.
During a special assembly of the FAI, an standard motion was posed to delegates. It was approved by a large margin.
Previous European Considerations
The European body had earlier put on hold plans to exclude Israeli football at the end of September, following the announcement of Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for the region.
Although they never publicly stated considering an extraordinary meeting on the issue, plans were understood to be well developed.
International Backdrop
The FAI move comes after comparable calls in September from the leaders of both Turkey and Norway's football associations for Israel's suspension from international competition.
These appeals were issued after United Nations experts urged Fifa and Uefa to ban the Israeli FA, referencing a UN commission of inquiry report that accused Israel of committing genocide during the Gaza conflict.
Israel has denied these claims and labeled the report as outrageous.
Potential Ramifications
If European football's authority choose to ban Israel, it would likely create tension with the United States government – joint hosts for the 2026 World Cup – which strongly opposes such an measure.
Even though the European body has the power to suspend Israeli teams from its tournaments, it may not be able to prevent them from taking part in qualification for the World Cup, which is governed by Fifa.
